After the siege of Colchester in 1648, Parliamentary soldiers came looking for John Wenlock, a loyalist who had long suffered for his support of Charles I. When they eventually found him, he was hauled to the Crown Inn, where he was brought before the rest of the troopers and their commander-in-chief who were lodged there.
The Sunday roast dinner is a Great British pub-food tradition The Crown wholeheartedly honour – and as a country pub, it’s our duty to offer the fine folk of Colchester a fitting feast every weekend.
Tuck into Sundays, Vintage style
Sundays at your favourite Vintage are the perfect occasion to gather together your loved ones. We serve a minimum of two of the following hand-carved meats plus a vegetarian option, as always with crispy roast potatoes, fresh vegetables and lashings of gravy…
- Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding
- Roast turkey with stuffing
- Herb crusted loin of sweet-cured pork (sourced from one of the only specialist bacon and gammon curers in the UK still using traditional methods)
- Carrot and nut roast
To wash it all down, we recommend one of our fine wines or seasonal ask ales. Roast beef and real ale – now there’s a rare Sunday pairing.
Make your own traditions
Eating out at your local pub on Sunday isn’t just about the traditional roast. For example, we’ve got braised pork belly and lamb shank for those who prefer a twist on a classic.
At The Crown, our freshly roasted Sunday dinners are very popular and whilst we try to serve them until 5pm, once they are gone that’s it until next Sunday! Book a table now to enjoy your Sunday roast with family and friends.

Unfortunately we had a really poor experience at the Crown today (Sunday 1st Feb) the service wasn’t great, the waiter didn’t know much about the menu or wine list and seemed under trained. But the real disappointment was the food (a mixed carvery platter for two plus a child’s beef roast) the platter was at best luke warm and the beef was dry and tough, tough enough to be inedible and it was identical for the child’s meal! We asked for more gravy in the hope we could inject some warmth using that but the gravy too was luke warm! The pork / Ham was not bad but the turkey was quite tough as well. The carrots, parsnips and even the cauliflower cheese were all under cooked and hard. The only redeeming item was the wine which was nice despite the waiter de-corking it over at the bar and simply plonking it in the wine cooler without an offer to taste or poor us a glass!
The decor and building are great, it seemed clean (apart from the glasses) but sadly the food was well under par!
Taste or pour you a glass? It’s a pub not the Ritz!
