  • Fantastic place not to be judged by the building. Delicious and HUGE fish and chips. Also had the goats cheese bruschetta for starter was delicious. Don't get it if you want to eat all of your main.

  • They don't/can't take swipe-only credit cards, so bring cash if that's all you have. It's worth the hassle.

  • Best thing about the Lion & Lobbo roast is that you can have half and half if u can't decide what meat to have or whether to have a nut roast. I had pork and beef. Delicious.

One review on “The Lion and Lobster

  1. We went to this pub as it was a ‘roast winner’ – but our experience wasn’t as good as we had hoped. One of our friends was gluten intolerant, and they had a list of ingredients in the roast which contained gluten – this included gravy and potatoes as well as Yorkshire pudding. The person serving was understanding, and noted down all the things our friend could actually eat on the list, and said they would phone the kitchen to explain, but that once they’d said ‘Gluten free’ it would be obvious what was needed. The food came – along with potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. We explained, and the waitress came back saying that the chef had said the potatoes and gravy were gluten free, and she could just take off the Yorkshire. We explained that this is not what it said on the list they had provided. The waitress came back again, insisting that the chef, who was apparently in a mood about it, and would ‘murder her’ had said that the potatoes and gravy were gluten free. Potatoes we could accept – as unless they’d been coated with something, they wouldn’t usually have gluten in them. But we thought that gravy was usually thickened with some kind of flour. And the list had said it had gluten in it. They suggested adding cauliflower cheese instead – the cheese sauce would usually have also been thickened with flour. They were not apologetic at all, and did not seem to recognise that their staff member had made a list of all the things our friend was able to eat in the first place. They kept saying, ‘well what do you want us to do. Take the gravy off?” This is Brighton in 2017 – surely they have had experience with gluten intolerance before? At the same time, the Yorkshires that we had ordered with two kids dinners did not arrive until the end of their meal, and our friend finally got a roast dinner after we had all finished. My roast was fine, the potatoes could have been crispier, and there could have been more meat – and it was all a bit cold, but still tasty. In the end they offered my friend a drink, and did not charge her for the meal, but it still made the whole meal uncomfortable, as the children were upset about the Yorkshires, and we were eating while the waitresses were going back and forth and our friend had nothing to eat. This is obviously a popular pub, and the staff were friendly, if one of them in particular seemed a bit clueless – but we would definitely not go back for a roast here.
