Set on the bank of the River Thames, against the picturesque backdrop of Wolvercote, The Trout is an historic building which traces its roots to the 17th century. Now offering al fresco dining and serving modern British cuisine, this cosy, country pub and the riverbank it sits on have provided inspiration for literary gems such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Trout restaurant menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.
The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Trout bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.
The Trout in Oxford is a 10-minute drive from Oxford Railway Station.

Why am I the first to review??? I can only imagine it’s because they’re trying to keep the place secret because it’s already brim full of satisfied customers.
Sunday lunch here is a dream. Even though you can usually just turn up, I recommend booking a table, as it gets very busy. The wait in such cases is the only minus I can pinpoint. But it’s not for no particular reason that it’s busy… the Sunday lunches will not disappoint, especially the planet – sized Yorkshire puddings. In addition there’s a wide range of other dishes on the menu that were hard to resist. I had to keep the Yorkshire at the forefront of my mind!
The list of puddings sounded equally delicious, but no need to choose – you can have a selection of each. Genius.
On top of all this, there’s outdoor, riverside terrace dining next to the Thames. They were happy to have our lovely dog dine with us and even brought him a water bowl. Plenty of polite waiting staff.
I recommend The Trout wholeheartedly.
